Burj-al-Karachi
I read this hilarious post on Karachi Metblogs today. You too can laugh at it on http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/2006/08/burjalkarachi.phtml.
The gist of it is that (quote) Karachi is truly on its way to becoming the next dubai, what with all the construction going on everywhere. .... The city govt. has recently signed an MoU with reps of FOUR arab states (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman) for construction of the country's first seven-star hotel (unquote)
ROFLMAO.
I mean, really.
Are there actually people out there who think that the only thing that makes Dubai a great place to live is the fact that it has a 7star hotel?
Do they think that Dubai's excellent lifestyle m ight even have something to do remotely with things like basic amentities being available to everyone all the time at reasonable cost, good roads, excellent safety and security etc etc and NOT its 7star hotel!
Let the people of Karachi have water and electricity round the clock, a good police force, education funding, guaranteed jobs when they graduate and THEN we can say Karachi is somewhat on the way to becoming like Dubai .....

i don't understand why karachiites are so interested in making karachi like dubai. why can't they work on adopting their own unique identity? dubai has followed path's with the west right down to the starbucks on every corner with wheelchair access ramps. sad. nevertheless, this comment isn't a poke at dubai, unfortunately karachi needs to work on improving it's civic services and then worrying about it's culture.
@ Halai. How are wheelchair ramps saddening for you.
@ bakpakcic. Hahahah.....u r sooo funny BPC. Pooch pooch....jaao maira bacha jooton ki shopping karo. This sort of post just makes you look ridiculous. Heheheh.....Dubai....basic amenities available to everyone....HAHAHAHAH......ask the boys in blue jaanee, not your blow dried, french manicured self. Smooch. I love your cuteness. Now next post about the great miniskirt bargains please!
how does the welfare system work in dubai?
I think Karachi is moving in the right direction for some time now.
More jobs for the educated, more freedom in the media etc etc..so why not a seven star hotel. Not long ago China and India had great problems but now look at them. Many of their citizens still lack facilities but they are working towards making it better. We can do it too.. :)
bpc uve hammered the nail right on its head! ppl in khi are sooooo out there to attain the materialistic good, theyre forgetting the neccessities that the other 98% of the population can't afford!
Sheza,
you got comment reply at Karachi Metroblog
Sheza, I know you've quite few problems with Pakistan but you don't need to be personal here.
You are wrong in assuming telling private people what to do what they own. This money belongs to some people and it's their decision how to spend it. Just like you and I spend our money to buy necessities despite there are people dying everywhere in this world. For poverty and slums, there are slums everywhere even in the West. But it never stops them to build million dollars of infrastructure which you and I use everyday. In this world of today money makes money. When one country has perfect system then she let her people to do business freely which bring jobs and taxes. The same taxes which helps western governments to pay unemployed (or sometimes underpaid) people stipends, free medical treatment, free schooling, cheap housing and etc. etc. I guess Pakistan should look at China and India and learn few tricks from them. Though both have different style of governments, one being a world's largest communist state and other is the largest democratic society. They're turning heads of people around the world with their exemplary progress in almost every area.
In reply to this comment submitted by you.
i agree with BPC. In their attempt to make themselves compete with world-class cities, karachiites are becoming even dumber! How does having a 7 star hotel make your city look like a one-of-the-best-cities in the world to live in? what may be available to perhaps 1% of the city does not justify the needs of the other 99% of the city. As it is, karachi is a city that has been shunned by the rest of pakistan - within karachi, karachiites are shunning out the other 99%! The money spent towards this one hotel could very well pay for the infrastructure of almost 50% of karachi's slums!
I don't think you share bakpakchik views
Economic development is not about merely about increasing/improving infrastructure and having bigger buildings. Karachi will not attain progress in it's truest form unless there is a change in its social values, cultural setbacks and its institutions (meaning rules and regulations and the enforcement of law and order).
Development and modernisation is not so unilateral, having a seven-star hotel is hardly something to celebrate when you're having 6 hour traffic jams and your roads break down at the slight hint of rains.
But then again, optimists live longer than pessimists :)
It's interesting to me to hear all of your views.
SOme one here said something like "People can do what they want with their own money . . ." It's NOT their own money and mine isn't my own money! It's God's money, and we are stewards!
No, it's none of my buisness what those people do with God's money. We are each responsible for what we're given. And we will be accountable. Yet, it should make us sad to see God's money being spent on endless wardrobe accessories while others are starving.
In my country (you can guess), we simply do not understand poverty. THe concept that others are in such great need is simply not understood. We do not see it. We are far away from it. Apathy surely accompanies abundace where human nature is concerned.
