Fucking Fawara

Have you heard about Karachi's newest attraction: what is alleged to be the tallest fountain in the world?

And apparently, the biggest waste of money.

GEO News reports that "The highest Fountain Jet of the world at Oyster Rocks in Keamari ... with estimated cost of Rs225 million ... the Fountain Jet will spew water up to 500 feet height and will be the world’s highest Fountain Jet.Presently the world’s highest Fountain Jet was located in Saudi Arabia, which spew water up to 350 feet height."

225 Fucking Million Rupees. Are You Fucking Kidding Me?!!!

It apparently costs 100k rupees to just run that fountain everyday (and as it normally runs from 8-12, it costs about 25k per hour!). Add that to the cost of building it, and you have The Fucking Worst Idea Anyone Has Ever Implemented In Pakiland.

There's been talk about it being a great tourist attraction and that - coupled with Aisa's largest park apparently right next to it - it's a place where vendors are setting up shop and can hope to eran lots of money.

How? By selling 15 rupee keychain? At that rate, yeah, the common man will eventually make back the money spent by the goverment in ... say ... a CENTURY?

Come on KPfuckingT ... 225 million?!!! Come on Parvez Moneybags Musharraf. Even I can think of better ways to have spent that money ... specially at this point of time, when there are thousand who need help getting on with their lives post-earthquake.

How is a bloody 500 foot fountain going to help them?

I have my doubts about the financial viability of the project.

I can't imagine many people coming to see a 'fountain' and 'Asia's largest park' besides those already living in Pakistan. Let's face it, it's a country with almost no toursit attractions and most foreigners are wary of its (well-earned) reputation for violence and terrorism. Add to that the filth you encounter everywhere and the condition of the roads, lack of public transport etc etc. NOT your ideal tourist destination. Name one beach easily accessible from Karachi that's clean enough and safe enough to have a swim.

Fine, the Northern Areas are lovely, but WHY would a ski enthusiast who's come for a cheap ski vacation go all the way South to Karachi to see a bloody fountain?

Remember Aladin Waterpark when it was first created.? What high hopes everybody had for that. Seen it recently?

It's swarmed by lower class people who have no other means of entertainment AND who have no sense of hygeine OR respect for public property. You'd be lucky to find a surface there that's not been painted on, peed on, or paan-spitted on. And don't even THINK of going in the water. What good is this 'waterpark' today? Can't imagine suggesting any tourists go there. Kya apni naak katwani hai goron ko itni gandi jagha bhej kar?

Fact of the matter is, the jaahil qaum always tend to congregate at such venues, effectively driving any upper/upper-middle class people away: people who might spend more money and who might be more respectful of such venues.

Have you ever seen the Minar-e-Pakistan? It's our equivalent of the Statue and Liberty and do you know what it's like? It's got paan stains all over it and people have scrathed their names and left their phone numbers and ingenious marketing executives have stuck sticker adverts for everything from sex-change operations to international fax services.

THAT is Pakistani Qaum for you.

And you expect them to respect this fountain? You think it will be in ANY state to be proud of even two years from now?

I went to Mushi's PR site.

" ... the President said that new management will invest millions of dollars to improve electric supply to Karachiites" (as opposed to the BILLIONS spent on a lousy fountain?!!!)

"Appreciating the efforts of KPT Chairman Vice Admiral Ahmed Hayat, he said under his dynamic leadership KPT was undertaking development projects. He said the port fountain was one of the tallest in the world and provides scenic view to the people. It will beautify the port, he added." (what might also beautify the port Mushi, is the cleaning of the creeks and beaches and better waste management - all of which would be more sensible than a jet of water shooting 500 feet into the air for no purpose other than 'beautification).

"President Musharraf said the coastline of Pakistan has to be developed. It gives a good feeling, he noted." (Has he bothered to note that decorrupting the police force, coming up with budgets that DON'T give 80% of everything to the Army, better infrastructre, more reliable and safer public transport, improved andi ncreased educational opportunities for the poor might all give 'a good feeling' ... and shall we say more long-term then a water jet?)

"He said British firm Invest Water Treatment has built the fountain." (funnily enough, the name didn't even pop up on Google. Hello. Even I pop up on Google, so what's the deal? Is this some shitty little backstreet operation that doesn't even have an online presence, or is Mushi's PR team too lazy to bother checking if the names mentioned in a release are correct?!)

"Later President General Pervez Musharraf unveiled the plaque and pressed the button to start the fountain. This was followed by a spectacular display of fireworks which lasted for quite some time. "

And so starts the story of yet more Paksitani funds going (literelly) down the drain.

Well done Mushi. What little respect I had for you is now lost.

PS: I live in the city of 'The Biggest', 'The Tallest' etc etc. When a country with excellent public education, great infrastructre, reliable public transport and a commendable police force does it, it makes sense.

grrrrrrrrrr... one main reason mushy's doing this is to just give a "visible" look of development! :s its so downright crappy, isn't there someone with a tiny shred of aqal in there who plans it, or is he too powerless to speak against it :s
I'm glad you wrote about it BPC, if its possible for you, do convey your sentiments in the form of a letters to the editor to Dawn, The news, nation, etc. and email them.

Dear Indian muslim,

I do not consider myself educated merely due to my hair color. I owe it more to the fact that I actually went to an educational institution and am now contributing to society by being a part of the corporate grid.

The reason I lashed out at some hajis is becasue i believe being a true mulim is not about throwing stones at a stick, chanting from a book verses you know didly-squat about and them coming home with a 'tind'.

And I believe knowing how to write fuck in a hundred different ways is preferable to having no identity other than' indian' and 'muslim'.

I am so much more than that ... as is made clear by my blog.

So take that stick out of your ass, and have your eyes checked: FUCK is a four letter word. It starts with F and ends with K, with a U and a C in the middle.

That's the only way i ever spelt it.

Whoa!
Relax people!
@ anonymous: you have your right to an opinion, but you also need to prove that you are responsible enough to be able to use it wisely.

@bpc: we are all angry at this stupid idea. If the kpt has so much money, then they could spend it on the development of their people. Have you seen keamari? Its like a slum! They are also constructing the worlds tenth tallest building. (sigh)

@bpc: my dad always says let people talk. Thats what the mouth was made for. Its upto you to decide who and what to listen to. Thats what your brain is for. Empty vessels make the most sound and there should be a charge on the level of noise one makes. That settles everything.
Cheers.

anonymous is getting a bit too emotional here, and could have voiced his opinion better.
but "The reason I lashed out at some hajis is becasue i believe being a true mulim is not about throwing stones at a stick, chanting from a book verses you know didly-squat about and them coming home with a 'tind'. "

u could get ur point across without making the acts of hajj sound so idiotic...i know wat ur trying to say...but dont give people the chance to lash out at u the way anonymous did...when handling subjects like religion, one has to be cautious, and since blogs are public and u have opened urs to comment, u will be subjected to harrassment.
u get..

i still havent seen the fountain yet, but yea that sound like a lotta money!

Yep you can't admonish some one for using bad words by using bad words yourself.

I know a few tricks on how to get rid of swearing habits if any one is intersted.

Here are my two cents...

If only if law and order situation is normal in Karachi as in other big cities in Asia then may be we could earn some foriegn exchange through tourism. But last I check we are f******G killing anything look west to us. What is the reaction of mullahs on this? Did anyone hear any fatwah's related to it?

Well there are millions of other ways to spend this money but after all we Karachities need entertainment when our sweet government had deprived us from Indian movies (yeah as legally banning it keep one away from watching it).

LOL mariam, so is 'entertainment' killing the 'western' looking people, or the fountain ;)

@Bakpakchik

Karachi has it's share of killing but lets not add non existent ones to them

The only foreigners killed in Karachi are high profile ones like diplomats and government officials.

Also let me add that during the rule of Mullahs in Karachi (Nizam was Rahmatullah Khan of the MMA) the situation improved a lot. Real improvements and not Fawarahs in defense. Places were cleaner road work that gets started but never completed were finally finishing. Crime rate decreased.

Now Karachi is back in the hands of non Mullahs and lets see what happens.

Mullahs or non-mullahs ... what karachi needs .. what PAKISTAN needs ... is a leader that realises the importance of a knowledge based economy.

Look at Singapore. It gained its independance 18 years after us. If anyone deserves to build a fountain, it's them!

I confess I haven't had enough time to read your latest entry (and its comments) as thoroughly as I'd like to, but I find it interesting that the subject has sparked so much aggression, from all parties.

Do you think Anonymous could be someone you know?

@anonymous 2...
being educated is a very subjective term even an 8 year old is "eduacted"...its a little more advanced than literacy actually.

The world we live in only looks at the papers we boast as degrees, and honestly speaking i have personally conducted quite a few interviews of the 2 best business schools of Karachi. im sorry to say that a degree does not give you education. its your frame of mind, your eagerness to learn, your humane nature that and ur consideration for other individuals, friends or otherwise, its what counts you amongst the ranks of the "eduacted" ones.

George Bush is "educated" by degree standards......but does that show?
there are many more....need i quote?

i wished u understood what u read what i wrote to start off with. I never said that u said "college education as a certificate of better wisdom". All I said was "im sorry to say that a degree does not give you education".

How else would you define your own statement "can u explain how u consider urself educated".?

ooh..and by the way...do i need to teach you how to shove it too?

Agreed on it being a complete waste of money. The one lakh operation cost is horrific and the money could be used for better purposes.

Unfortunately though I have to agree with anonymous on one point even though I don't agree with the whole personal bashing he/she undertook. I don't think the "lower class" would take very kindly to being classed as second rate humans. Its very easy to define people into neat little groups but it doesnt work that way at all. The scribblings you mentioned are equally likely to have been inscribed by upper middle class teenagers who think its cool. The pan stains are pretty much synonymous with the discreet spitting indugled in by all classes due to smoking like madmen. Also whats bad hygeine or lack of education when compared to educated, rich people who graduate from Ivy Leagues and becomes CEO's within the Gun Trade and Tobacco Industry? Personally the rich just have more resources to destroy on a grander scale.

Eitherways twas my two cents. Don't mean to be condescending or such. Merely offering an alternate view. I come by here off and on and yours is always an interesting take on situations around the world. Thumbs up!

i just love roaming throught random whining posts. the government blah this blah that. seriously, all the issues of the world should be dealt with at once! take care of education people are going to whine about government corruption. take care of that people are going to whine about our police abuses. and the sweetest part is that we do all this sitting in our airconditioned rooms using our dsl lines probably not even sitting anywhere in pakistan.
the state of education. has anyone noticed the so-called lower class doesn't want to be educated? believe u me, we've tried.. but they just don't wanna. they don't want to get out of those shitholes they live in. probably because they don't know the world outside of that. what they do want is entertainment. who doesn't? ever noticed how many parks we have in karachi? that fountain atleast gives some people hope that someone IS looking out for them. even if its for a bit. you want to spend money of the eq ridden people, right? ofcourse a person would have to go thru a disaster for someone to help him out, right? send all your donations to the eq people. and just forget all the poor souls who don't have any shelter or food here in the city you live in. they have to get their own disaster before we can care for them. take it all away from them. burn the parks n turn off the fountain. these people don't deserve this shit. n while they work their lives away 24/7/52 we can go have our lovely vacations in the hilly areas.. have u seen the people going to beaches, or mostly just sea view in trucks? it really is a sad sight. all the girls wearing bright lipsticks n powdered faces. and do you wanna know whats really wrong with the picture? the fact that they're having fun.. they're enjoying themselves.. they're happy. they're content..is that too much to ask? i've seen people high up spitting pan... running to the foodstalls in wedding as soon as the lids go off.. they were educated people as well.. yes, it made me sick to my stomach.. but i realised that thats how they are. its something called the human nature.
anyhow. the poor people suck. the rich people suck. the educated suck. the uneducated suck. mushy sucks. bush sucks. saddam sucks. israeli suck. palestini suck. you suck and so do i. :) God Bless (read Help) us all.
